The Great Scroll of Isaiah and Why it Matters

The Shrine of the Book – Israel Museum, Jerusalem

Greetings and Blessed Love!

For those of us who love the original language of the Bible – Hebrew or Lashone haKodesh – the Great Isaiah Scroll offers a remarkable connection between our current bibles and the ancient Hebrew text.

Discovered in Qumran Cave 1 in 1947 and dated to around 125 BCE, it preserves all 66 chapters of Isaiah across 54 columns. It is the oldest known complete copy of the book—roughly 1,000 years older than the medieval Hebrew manuscripts (i.e. the Aleppo Codex) previously available to scholars.

The text broadly agrees with the later traditional Hebrew text, revealing remarkable continuity across centuries. It also preserves differences in spelling, wording, and scribal corrections that help scholars understand how Scripture was copied and passed down.

These truths are quite crucial to biblical scholars and Hebrew students worldwide, who have wanted to know for centuries if their current Hebrew bibles are true to the original text inscribed by the hand of Baruch dictated by the Prophet Yishiyahu himself.

When the scrolls were discovered in 1947 with the book of Isaiah intact, men and women of faith across the globe experienced relief and joyful validation.

I was blessed to see a replica of the scroll Preserved at Jerusalem’s Shrine of the Book earlier this week and learn about the history and culture of the Yachad or Essenes community who transcribed them.

The scroll is not only a authenticator, but it gives us a tangible witness to the truth of Isaiah’s end time prophecies about HaMashiach and the Kingdom age – another reason to keep studying it.

Thanks for reading and I hope you enjoy my short video clip from outside the Shrine of the Book museum housed at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem. I’d love your feedback.

This is a beginning to a new Historical Cultural Travel vlog from the Holy Land.
